Number of Papers published in peer-reviewed journals: Number of Papers published in non peer-reviewed journals: Final Report: Modeling Systems of Dependent Components Report Title New classes of stochastic models for network systems having stochastically dependent components are studied by a combination of probabilistic analysis and efficient simulation techniques. For instance, in a model in which shocks of r different types occur, with component i failing when there have been a total of n(i) type i shocks, we give a method for studying the distribution of the the number of shocks needed to cause the system to fail. Stochastic optimization problems related to stochastic assignment and stochastic knapsack models have been studied. For instance, we consider the static stochastic problem where a subset of components of known values but having random weights it initially put into a knapsack, with a reward equal to the sum of their values obtained provided that their total weight does not exceed the capacity of the knapsack. New variance reduction simulation results related to normalized importance sampling and improved estimators of tail distributions have been obtained, (a) Papers published in peer-reviewed journals (N/A for none) Enter List of papers submitted or published that acknowledge ARO support from the start of the project to the date of this printing. Kras, Pten, NF-κB, and inflammation: dangerous liaisons.

Ying and colleagues identify a novel function of Pten as a haploinsufficient tumor suppressor in human pancreatic cancer development. Genomic, genetic, and biochemical data reveal that Pten loss and Kras mutation cooperate to accelerate pancreatic cancer development by altering PI3K regulation to enhance NF-κB activation and upregulate downstream cytokine genes; this provides a protumorigenic a...

Legius syndrome: case report and review of literature

A 8-month-old child was referred to our Dermatologic Unit for suspected Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1), because of the appearance, since few days after birth, of numerous café-au-lait spots (seven larger than 5 mm); no other sign evocative of NF 1 was found. Her family history was remarkable for the presence of multiple café-au-lait spots in the mother, the grandfather and two aunts. The famil...

Spectroscopic Redshifts for Seven Lens Galaxies

We report Very Large Telescope observations of 11 lensed quasars, designed to measure the redshifts of their lens galaxies. We successfully determined the redshifts for seven systems, five of which were previously unknown. The securely measured redshifts for the lensing galaxies are: HE0047−1756 z = 0.408; PMNJ0134−0931 z = 0.766; HE0230−2130 z = 0.522; HE0435−1223 z = 0.455; SDSS0924+021 z = 0...
